WINNER OF THE
"WORLD WETLANDS DAY - YOUTH PHOTO CONTEST", organized by the RAMSAR Convention.
Capibaribe River, Limoeiro - PE, Brazil.
"I live in the small town of Passira, and in the late afternoon I was driving back from the nearby town (Limoeiro). As almost always carry my camera gear in hand, was using alternative roads, looking for images that called me the attention. Probably was not safe to use a camera there (or anywhere else in a similar situation), but I was optimistic, as always. Already near the exit of the city, crossing the smallest of the three bridges that cross the urban area, I came across this scene. The light was naturally flawless, with a beauty rarely seen. The atmosphere was blue, contrasting with the gently newborn green of the first rains of the season. Right next to the bridge were some boys and two horses, ready to enter the river. I stopped the car, grabbed my camera (Nikon D7000), and put it over the lens that I thought appropriate at the time, my dear Nikkor 105mm f-2.5 AI-S, of manual focus. The boys entered the water and I was approaching me slowly, as I could without having to enter the water. I spent a few minutes looking for a good angle and trying to anticipate the movements of individuals. After about 10 minutes, I could already predict certain situations at certain times, and that's exactly how I prepared to make the picture. I was in the best possible place, framing and waiting for the right moment to make the click, until, as happened a few times (in less favorable angles), the horse raised his front paws, raising a bit of water, with the boy on the back . It was the perfect time, as those in which even before photographed already know will be a great picture.
The light played a big role in everything, cutting horse, kid, water flying, giving sky color to the river, shining in net ripples and vegetation. I kept clicking in and out of the scene until the rain began to show signs of presence where I was, and for a matter of seconds unable to frame a radius which unexpectedly left the sky deep in the scene. With time rapidly closing and the sun fading completely, all came out of the water, and I was just there though, with happy life."

In brazilian northeaster there is no snow. The winter is the season where it rains and the plants grow.

Location
The photo was taken in Limoeiro, a city next to mine, Passira. The river in the image is called "Capibaribe", and it is one of the most important rivers of my state, Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil.Time
I was traveling by car, going back home, it was just over 3:00 PM on April 10, 2014. Near the exit of the city, crossing the smaller of the three bridges that slice the urban zone of the municipality, I came across this scene. The light was naturally flawless, with a beauty rarely seen. The atmosphere was blue, contrasting with the gently newborn green of the first rains of the season. Right next to the bridge were some boys and two horses, ready to enter the river. I stopped the car, took my camera in my hands, positioned myself and prepared to photograph. The atmosphere was blue, contrasting with the gently newborn green of the first rains of the season. Right next to the bridge were some boys and two horses, ready to enter the river. Something reminded me of my grandmother's old farm, the peace of childhood, as if it were the image of a memory or a dream.Equipment
This image was made with a Nikon D7000, with a Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI-S, manual focusing lens I had just purchased. No other equipment was used beyond that.Inspiration
As I almost always ride with my photographic equipment, I was using alternative routes looking for images that jumped in my eyes. I do not know if it was exactly safe to use a camera there (or anywhere else in a similar situation), but I was optimistic, as always.Editing
Surprisingly, being a landscape photograph with backlit pictures, the image was actually very good, even without editing, thanks to the fine adjustments I made on the camera. I developed RAW image basically with only minor fixes in white balance and shadows. I also improved the sharpness so that the small details could be seen more easily. In my camera bag
I am always with a backpack and a great variety of lenses because I think I'm going to need something very specific at all times, which is not always true, but I prefer to always be aware. My camera is a D7000, it has good image quality, is cheap, robust, reliable and has a focus motor, which allows me to use "D" type lenses with autofocus. I always carry the original lens of the kit, a Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6, which I practically do not use, a Nikon 50mm f/1.4G, fantastic lens with wide aperture, a Kenko extender tube for possible macro shots, a large and strong second-hand Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED for distant subjects and large closes, a Nikon TC-200 teleconverter, for even more distant subjects, a super fantastic Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, amazing lens, the best wide angle for APS-C sensors in my opinion, and his great companion, the Hoya HD Circular Polarizer filter, perfect for fast landscape photography. Sometimes I go out with my Nikon 50mm f/1.8D, it has a good optics, good aperture and low price. It is my favorite to use with extension tubes. And an old Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI-S, manual focusing, with one of the best optics and construction I've seen in a lifetime. A collector's item! I also usually walk with an old Vanguard tripod and some cleaning accessories.Feedback
Riverbanks and animals can sometimes make you get a little dirty, so be careful where you step and try to be dressed in a suitable outfit, preferably with a boot and pants. The river is the main source of water for all nearby animals, so be prepared for a possible encounter with a potentially dangerous animal such as a snake. Make sure the area is publicly owned, or, if it is private, that you are allowed to be there. Make sure the place is safe. Pay attention to the weather and the position of the sun. I particularly like to photograph subjects in the river at dawn or late afternoon, as the contrast becomes more interesting and the possible reflections in the water are more beautiful. The atmosphere has more magic. Try to predict the facts in advance and adjust quickly, some clouds can ruin a perfect light. Try to be patient and vary the angles, explore the possibilities, but always be ready for the crucial moment.
