Behind The Lens

Location

Every year the Smithsonian Institute sponsor a "Folklife Festival" on the National Mall. Artisans come to the Mall for two weeks and illustrate the arts from their countries. Each year the festival highlights two or three countries.

Time

This photo, of a potter, was taken around mid day on the mall.

Lighting

The lighting was flat which was great so that there were no shadows.

Equipment

This was hand held taken with a Nikon D800 and a Nikon 85 mm lens.

Inspiration

I am fascinated with people who work with their hands and this is one of a collection of images, mostly of craftsmen performing their craft. I like this one because of the colors in the background that seem to help emphasize the central element of the photo.

Editing

Just some minor adjustments in photoshop.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry a Nikon D800, Nikon 24-70mm, Nikon 14-24 mm and sometimes a Nikon 300mm. I also carry a few neutral density filters, polarizer and a flash. On non normal days I sometimes carry the Nikon 85 mm like was used for this image or a Nikon 500mm.

Feedback

Take lots of images from a variety of angles. When you get home you might see something that you missed on site. Take your time. There is no hurry most of the time. I find that just waiting around can allow me to better see the best angles or views of the subject. If you have time take a few practice shots to make sure you have the exposure what you want and try the shot with a variety of deapths of field. The Nikon 85 mm allows you a lot of control of the amount that the background can be out of focus.
