Terrific shot! This would be great in my Space Vehicles challenge. You can find it by going to my profile, then "challenges", and then "created".

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at the Udvar Hazy Museum of the Smithsonian. Part of the Air and Space Museum located in Chantilly, Virginia. I stood in front of the Space Shuttle.
Time
This photo was taken in the afternoon, but the light is that provided for the exhibition.
Lighting
There was no special lighting beyond that present in the museum. I wanted the ceiling to be black as one would imagine deep space.
Equipment
This was taken with a Nikon D800 and a Nikon 24-70 lens. No tripod or flash.
Inspiration
Standing in front of the shuttle I noticed this very symmetric image with the shuttle and in the background satellites and the space artifacts.
Editing
Just some minor photoshop adjustments.
In my camera bag
Normally I carry the Nikon D800 and a 24-70 zoom and the 14-24mm zoom when visiting something like a museum When on the street I bring along a tripod and a collection of neutral density filters.
Feedback
The best way to capture this kind of image is to shoot a number of images. On the occasion that I created this image I tried a large number of other angles of the shuttle. I always try to shoot a collection of approaches that I can evaluate at home. Try to have your camera with you is the best advice I can give.
