Amazing! That's a shot I hope I never have the change to get! Creepy. I assume the Heron didn't eat that thing, did it?

Im curious to the rest of the story, did it actually kill it and eat it or did it get away?
But great timing!

Location
This photo was taken along the Potomac River just above Great Falls.Time
Typically I try to get out and be on the site around sunrise. On this day I was quite late and chose a spot to sit on the side of the river to wait and see if anything would happen. This photo was taken about mid morning. I watched this particular heron for around an hour. I find it best to not be in any kind of hurry.Lighting
There was nothing special about the lighting other than it was a little cloudy.Equipment
This was taken with with a Nikon D800 and a 300 mm f4 lens.Inspiration
If one waits long enough something always happens. In this case the heron caught the black snake and I took a number of images. This one, in which maybe the snake had caught the bird was my favorite. The snake did not win the battle.Editing
Minimal adjustments in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I usually carry several lens, 24-70 zoom, 300mm and sometimes a 500 mm. Also a tripod and neutral density filters for landscapes around the water. I travel up and down the river over a 30 mile distance on a regular basis.Feedback
My only advice is to be there. You will need to be patient and wait. Most of the time, but not always, this works. Also, make sure your equipment is ready to go as when something happens it will be only a brief moment.
