Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my hometown Oceanside, California at Oceanside Pier, one of the longest wooden piers on the west coast. It's my favorite location to photograph.

Time

This was taken just after sunset when the shadows, colors and reflections are captured best.

Lighting

The lighting is usually best just after sunset. The colors intensify after sunset, making the photograph more dramatic.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 7D using a Sigma wide angle 10-20mm lens set at 10mm. I used a tripod and an automatic shutter release.

Inspiration

I know the best time to capture colors and reflections in the wet sand at the beach is at sunset. After checking the tide schedules, I found the day when the tide would be at it's lowest at sunset. Fortunately the clouds were terrific at sunset also and the 2 surfers just happened to stop and watch the sunset. So I was lucky having them stop long enough for me to take this shot. The sky, clouds, reflections and the surfers combined to inspire me to take this favorite shot of mine.

Editing

Yes, I used Nik Color Efex Pro and added just a touch of warmth with the warmth filter and added some contrast. Then cleaned up a touch of noise with Photoshop PS5.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon 7D with a Canon 24-105mm L lens normally attached. I always have my Sigma 10-20mm wide angle with me and find myself using it more and more. I also have a couple of long lenses, have a tripod and shutter release available and some ND filters for silky watershots just in case. and a Nikon D3200 with a Sigma lens 17-50mm f2.8 for hand held low light indoor event shoots.

Feedback

To make sure you have as much reflection as possible in the wet sand, check tide tables on the west coast and go at low tide. If you can find a low tide at sunset or just after, that's the time to go. Wet sand and clouds at sunset add color and dimension to your capture. If you can take photos at sunset time (or sunrise on the east coast) you will get silhouettes, like the pier and people here. Use a tripod and automatic shutter release so the photo will be as sharp as possible. My Canon 7D camera settings with my Sigma 10-20mm lens were Aperture, 10mm, f/22, ISO400. Happy shooting!
