The lighting on this is beautiful...The starred lights make it spectacular.

Congrats on being a finalist Julianne! Is this the Oceanside Pier (North side)?

Behind The Lens

Location

Oceanside Pier in Oceanside Ca. is one of my favorite photography locations. It's one of the longest wooden piers on the west coast and is subject to many moods and visited by many people.

Time

This was taken May 20th, 2015 at my favorite time of day, right after sunset when the pier lights go on. You can still see the trace of the sunset in the sky and the calm is settling the ocean.

Lighting

I wanted to draw the eye to the reflections of the lights on the water, but I didn't want to wait too long after sunset. The later it gets, the lighting gets more contrast and isn't as welcoming. I also wanted to capture some of the last light from the sky in the water and on the rocks, so timing was important. I also wanted to capture the figure walking on the pier in the light if possible. I had the ISO at 100, so that created a long exposure (13 seconds) which gave more light and I set the camera to f/22 which creates the star effects on the lights.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D with a 10-20mm Sigma lens set to 10mm, a tripod (a must for long exposures) and a automatic shutter release.

Inspiration

The pier always inspires me. This evening was cloudy without a dramatic sunset and several people were walking alone on the pier. It was a quiet beautiful evening to be at one with the ocean and nature.

Editing

I didn't do much processing, just accented the clouds in sky with a little ND work in Nik Filters.

In my camera bag

I always have my camera ready with a 24-105mm Canon L lens..great for walking around. But I find I use my Sigma 10-20mm more than often because I love how it shows off the clouds in landscapes. And I love to shoot landscapes and the ocean. I have my tripod in my car trunk for long exposures or for multiple shots for HDR and an automatic shutter release. I also carry a 10 stop ND filter for long exposures, but rely on the night to produce results like this without it.

Feedback

If you want the star effects on your lights use a tripod, an automatic shutter release and set your camera on Aperature, ISO 100 and f/22 makes the stars. Low tide is best for reflections..so check your tide levels before you go :) Enjoy the mood and walk til you find the perfect spot.
