Location
This photo was taken at WindanSea beach on a rainy day in LaJolla California, a favorite place of mine.Time
It was my first time shooting at this great place and even though it had been overcast and sprinkling rain, I felt that I needed to see the ocean this day. It was later in the afternoon and the sun was peeking through the clouds making sun streaks on the water here and there.Lighting
The sun was low in the sky in the afternoon and the cloud cover made for moody lighting on the water. All of a sudden this wave rushed in, fanned out, and I caught it at just the right timed exposure.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 7D and a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens using a tripod, a neutral density filter and an automatic shutter release.Inspiration
I had seen other examples of shots taken at this great beach and when I got there I could see why other photographers love this setting. The rocks in the water and the way the ocean moves around them makes for some wonderful long exposure opportunities. The overcast skies and clouds just added to the drama in this photo.Editing
Yes, I did some filter processing with Nik, some clean up with LightroomIn my camera bag
I always carry my Canon 24-105mm f4L lens (my choice for a great walking around, all purpose lens), and my Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens. I have a long lens but don't take it with me too often. I love shooting landscapes and find I prefer being almost on top of my shots with my wide angle lens. In fact, the wave almost got me wet in this shot. I carry a few neutral density filters with different stops. I think I used a 8ND on this shot. Also a tripod and automatic shutter release are always necessary for long exposure shots.Feedback
For long exposures during the day use a 8ND filter, set up your focus first before attaching the filter. I used f/22, ISO100, a tripod and an automatic shutter release. This was taken with a wide angle lens set at 10mm with the Canon 7D on manual with the shutter release held for 3 seconds.
