Love this. I've done something similar. The backdrop on this really works behind the rain drops. I might be way off but is this Prague? Also works well in black & white too. Well done! :)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made in Amsterdam, on one rainy day in January 2015. I was sitting by the window in a cozy De Brabantse Aap restaurant and waited for a cup of coffee. For me, this photo is very special and intimate as whole spectrum of feelings and emotions is bared in it. It is bared by telling stories, which are on both sides of the glass. If you look at this picture with an open heart, you can see a tiny dog in the basket of the bicycle, taken to the vet where he will hear merciless diagnosis of plague. You can see a girl on the back seat of the tram, where she reads the last text message from the man she thought to be the love of her life, before he disapeared and she does not know the reason why. Or maybe you will feel yourself on this side of the glass and you will be happy that it rains. Because if it rains, nobody can see your tears.

Time

It was a little after noon, and I hid from the rain in a restaurant. Chose to sit next to the window, because I like to observe. I looked through it - first I saw the rain drops slowly and gently rolling down. Then I saw the world behind it. And I couldn't hold myself, I tried to capture the love falling from the sky.

Lighting

All my best pictures are made in natural lighting with no artificial staging. I value moments of real life.

Equipment

At that very moment, I had no camera with me, so I used my iPhone 6 Plus. No other equipment.

Inspiration

Maybe my inspiration was these rain drops, maybe the sound of them falling on glass. Or maybe a cup of hot coffee. Or a childhood memory, which stroke like a lightning. Or maybe it was everything together? I am sure of one thing - to make pictures like this one needs a special inner state. You need to be open for the world and for yourself. Only then you can see, hear, smell, feel and be completely honest with your feelings, memories, fears and expectations. Completely vulnerable. Maybe it is the reason why I take pictures only when I travel and when I'm far away from my casual surroundings, where I feel like I have to be watchful, cautious and managing the situation.

Editing

I only slightly increased the brightness of the picture with Aperture software. I try to resist the temptation to "beautify" picture and add drama.

In my camera bag

Usually I carry my Nikon D300 with Nikkor 18-300 mm lens and it is suitable for almost all situations. My photos are mostly born during travels and are unintentional. They are also made by capturing a glimpse of the moment or observing stories happening around - the key is to be able to hear and see at the same time.

Feedback

Take photos not only when you see something, but also - when you feel. Although for me - it's the same. If I don't take a shot, it's because I don't see. I don't see the story behind it. When working with photos and dealing with publish - do not be afraid. Do not hesitate to uncover yourself and believe - there are many people who will see and feel emotions similar to the ones you put in your picture.
