Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the bathroom of an apartment on the roofs of Florence on a very bright day. Tristan was leaning on the cabinet in the bathroom near the window and the inspiration came immediately!

Time

The shot was taken at 3 PM on a sunny day even if it was still cold because it was February 24 of 2019. Tristan took the various poses and, to make the photo, I caught the moment that I judged to be more expressive, asking him to put his fingers near his mouth. Very good she to interpret what I had asked.

Lighting

The illumination is totally natural and comes from a window in the room. It was enough to make the model move slightly by making the light come from one side only, leaving the room slightly dim. The cream-colored walls have allowed for a soft and uniform color.

Equipment

To make this photo I used the Nikon D850 equipped with Nikkor 70-200 focal length 145mm. The long focal length and the aperture of the diaphragm at 2.8 created a pleasant back focus (even if we were close enough).

Inspiration

As I said earlier, the softness of the lights filtered by the curtains present in the windows and the color of the walls have greatly influenced the desire to make this photo. The slight transparency of the white blouse and dark Tristan hair have created the contrast that is not too marked, which is suitable for this type of photo. Softness then emphasized with the use of color curves in post production.

Editing

I didn't do particular post production because I love making photos in a natural way. I take great care with the shot that (immediately) must be good. Post production was limited to the development of the raw file which allowed me to emphasize the transparencies and soften the strong contrasts on the hair. With Photoshop I then adjusted the curves to further soften the contrasts and define the edges markedly.

In my camera bag

In my bag the Nikon D85 and D5 are normally present. The goals that never fail are: Nikon 14-24; 24-70 and 70-200 (all f / 2.8), obviously present the 84 f / 1.4

Feedback

The important thing to take photos like this is to be able (first of all) to imagine the photo since shooting. The positioning of the model with respect to the main light source is very important to create those shadows that make it interesting. I don't like super-illuminated flat photos and I always try to create shadow areas. An important thing is also to observe the colors that surround the subject you want to photograph. If the walls are green, the light tends to turn green. If they are beige (as in this case) the light that will illuminate the subject will have a color similar to the model's skin. Therefore, neutral colors also in clothing and that do not distract the observer's attention to the main subject which is (in fact) the model. That said, you must be able to capture the moment that you like by giving directions to the model. In this case I told him to make the sensual image by playing with his lips and fingers.
