Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. The zoo provides such a wide range of photo opportunities.

Time

This was taken mid morning. I had hiked 10 miles just the day before and was favoring my feet a bit. The pause at the flamingo area offered some rest to my feet and a great chance to catch a bit of flamingo conversation.

Lighting

It was a cloudy day so no glares or over brightness which allowed for a darker background.

Equipment

This shot was captured with a Sony SLT-A65V, no tripod or flash and a Tamron 70-300mm lens.

Inspiration

Flamingoes fascinate me for not only their color, but the long necks and their knees that seem to be put on backwards! I love it when I can catch animals in a seemingly conversation. And this moment looked like a definite conversation. I also liked being able to center the 2 conversationalists.

Editing

I did some minimal vignetting to add some further darkness to the edges of the background. I then sharpened a little for better clarity of the flamingoes themselves.

In my camera bag

I carry the Sony SLT-A65V, the stock lens, the Tamron 70-300mm lens and an extra charged battery. I personally have more success with the Tamron lens for my macro shots so it is always very near if not on my camera.

Feedback

Patience and awareness. These are the 2 things that can make or break that great shot. Your eyes must be ever observing to catch that one moment in time. Look for your own shots, not the ones that you've already seen captured.
