I took this photo in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia during my annual vacation there.Time
Cityscapes like this beg to be photographed during blue hour. So you can on one hand capture the city lights and on the other hand get a somewhat balanced exposure.Lighting
As I've already said: the blue hour is perfect for cityscapes like this because of the already turned on city lights, lacking of light pollution and the balanced exposure.Equipment
I've used my Canon 17-40/4 L on my Canon 5d Mk II on a tripod.Inspiration
As it was in Malaysia several times I always look for new perspectives of the city. I used Google Maps to look for a lake not far from the inner city to capture it from there and get some nice reflections. Also I wanted to include the shore of the lake to get some more depth and together with the distortion of the stitching process it's building a frame for the cityscape.Editing
The biggest part of the post production was to stitch the panorama together in Photoshop. Part of the time I use Color Efex Pro to improve some details and an overlay layer based on gray to lighten up or darken parts of the image. In my camera bag
My standard equipment is: Canon 5d Mk II Canon 15/2.8 fisheye Canon 17-40/4 L Canon 50/1.4 Canon 70-200/4 L Tokina 100/2.8 Macro Tamron 150-600 Several filters (ND, gradient, polarization) from Hitech tripod Canon 580 EX flash a gray cardFeedback
Look in Google Maps for a nice spot to shot from to capture the place you want. Try to imagine what the best light will be and return there for a better try if you aren't satisfied :). If you can't return for some time you need to be prepared well...there are other tools and apps which can help you to calculate where and when the sun will rise and set.
