Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Royal Air Force Coningsby. The Boeing E-3 Sentry was taxiing out to backtrack down the runway ready for takeoff. I was outside the base at the fence but knew it would pass me allowing the chance to capture a great close up.

Time

Mid morning on a warm summer day gave great light on the aircraft but I also liked the heat haze and shimmer looking down the length of the runway in the background.

Lighting

Natural light of a bright sunny summers day.

Equipment

Handheld shot using a Nikon D610 with a Tamron 150-600mm lens allowed me to get a great close up of this amazing aircraft.

Inspiration

An obsession with military aviation and photography combined to inspire me to take this shot. I wanted to convey the size, majesty, intricacy as well as the utilitarian qualities of this amazing machine.

Editing

The photograph was processed in Photoshop to crop, adjust focus and sharpen slightly. I then used Nik tools to increase the local contrast and structure, I wanted to bring out all the details of the nuts and bolts engineering as well as show the wear and tear evident on the fuselage.

In my camera bag

For aviation, wildlife and action shots I always carry the Tamron 150-600 super zoom as well as the Nikon 70-300mm. I normally share these between the Nikon D610 and D500 bodies.

Feedback

Taking aviation shots around an active Air Force base can throw up lots of chances for very varying shots. I now take two bodies with a large zoom and a wider focal length to increase my chances of getting the shot I want. Research the best accessible locations without trespassing on to local land or hindering local access.
