Location
I took the photo in the swiss mountains near the lake Sihlsee. The moutain in the background is called Fluebrig. The landscape is a former moor area which has a water drainage system to use the area for agriculture.Time
The photo is made of two exposures. The one for the foreground was taken at late blue hour after sunset. The one for the sky was taken later at darkness. As it was December that was not very late, only about 9 pm.Lighting
The photo is a composing of two exposures, one for the landscape and one for the milky way. The reason is that while you have to photograph the milky way during complete darkness you wouldn't see much of the landscape at that time.Equipment
I used my Canon 5d Mark II and the EF 16-35 f4 lens. The camera stood on a Sirui tripod. I didn't use any filters or artifical light.Inspiration
I saw this landscape behind lake Sihlsee on the way back from snowboarding. I was fascinated by all the little huts and the view to the surrounding moutains. So I decided to go back there with my camera. It was a very clear and cold evening, there were no clouds at all. The sky was very impressive although it was only the winter night sky. A lot of time during photographing I just stood there and watched the sky and was absolutely captivated.Editing
My first step is always to do major adjustments in Camera Raw. Afterwards I use photoshop. In this image I had to put the two exposures to one photo which needed some masking work. The processing of the milky way took most of the time to get a maximum of contrast without loosing the natural look. The foreground only needed some contrast and color adjustments. In my camera bag
I always take my Canon 5d Mark II and the EF 16-35 mm f4 with me. It is my absolute favorite lens and I like it for city photography as well as landscapes because of the wide angle and its sharpness. Aditionally to the lens I use diverse neutral density and polar filters to control reflections and the effects of long exposures. And of course a tripod belongs to my basic equipment.Feedback
Capturing the night sky can be challenging but is also a huge enjoyment. You will need a good preparation in advance, per example the research of a good spot without light pollution, the position of the milky way or the rising times of the moon. You will also need some high quality equipment and of course a tripod. The photographing itself will require some patience, as you will need time to get to a good spot, you will have to be there early to take exposures of the foreground as long as there is still some light and you will have to wait for the milky way to appear. Afterwards you will need some skills in photoshop for the post-processing, but there are lots of great tutorials on youtube.
