These tracks run between the small farming towns of Alberta picking up loaded grain cars from the inland grain terminals as they go. This particular set runs north westerly from Didsbury Alberta and if you are there on the right date and time you can find this. The gray haze was caused by forest fire smoke.

The way to the Sun. Maybe, have you incredibly found it out? Original shot, indeed.

Behind The Lens

Location

At a railway crossing just west of Didsbury Alberta Canada.

Time

As can be seen from the image the sun was low on a summer's evening. That far north the time would have been between about 07:00 and 09:00PM

Lighting

The gray haze that rendered the sun an orange orb was caused by forest fires burning in Alberta leaving the sky a sooty gray color over the western half of the province. I knew that on a certain day in July the sun gets nicely lined up with this rail line so I went out to see what it might look like with all the smoke in the air and what you see in the image was my reward.

Equipment

Nikon D800E, Manfroto Tripod with a Ball Head, Nikkor 28-300mm zoom.

Inspiration

I grew up on the Canadian Prairie just east of the mountain slopes and I think its the most beautiful place in the world. I'm always looking for images in that environment to show the beauty of the place. It's unfortunate that I don't live there anymore and I have to pack all my Alberta picture taking into one month in the summer when I go home to visit.

Editing

I almost always adjust exposure, sharpening etc and if there are any distracting elements in the image I remove them.

In my camera bag

I travel with two Nikon Camera bodies, a D800E and a D750. The lenses are Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8, Nikkor 28-300mm, Nikkor 85mm f/1.8, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, and a SIGMA 150-600mm Sport Version lens. Included in my kit are a number of ND Filters and Graduated ND Filters Polarizers and flash guns.

Feedback

I have always spent a lot of time looking at other people's images wishing that I could get shots as beautiful. While I still admire other people's work I have begun to realize that if I master the fine art of seeing I begin to see images all around me that are every bit as good. How they look in the final analysis really depends on how I practice my craft. I've also found that thinking about and planning for light, angle, time of day and thinking about how I want the final image to look helps too. There is still a lot of serendipity in my photography but planning gets me to the place I need to be to take advantage of the unexpected.
