Location
This photo was taken in the Kruger National Park in South Africa - this was my first trip there; I have been back twice since, and am going again in 2024!Time
The golden hour! Just as the sun started to go down.Lighting
The golden hour is pretty self-explanatory! It is the most magical time of day to take photos in southern Africa - the light takes on a beautiful golden hue that suffuses all your photos.Equipment
Canon EOS 450D, Canon telephoto lens (100-400mm), nothing else!Inspiration
I find the wildlife of Africa endlessly inspiring - there is always a new way of looking at things, a new perspective on an animal you've seen many times before. The way this buffalo held eye contact through the long grasses inspired me to incorporate the grass in the photograph rather than trying to manoeuvre around it.Editing
I cropped the image slightly, but other than that I left it as it was.In my camera bag
When I took this photo, all I had was my Canon 450D and telephoto lens - they served me well on this trip! I have a Canon 5D now, and a few different lenses, but I still love that first combo.Feedback
Just head to Kruger and see what you find! Keep your eyes open, and work with the habitat to get photos with a great sense of place.
