Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in Mendenhall Glacier Ice Cave. I was shooting as a second in the post wedding shot. I had been exploring the ice caves for years and suggested to a friend that he should shoot one of his wedding shots in the caves. After little convincing and an agreeable bride and groom, we kayaked out to the ice caves and did this session.

Time

It was shot during midday, and since it was in a cave, the sun was not an issue.

Lighting

My friend used off camera flash and I used natural lighting. There was enough light coming through the cave to do some low exposure shots.

Equipment

I shot using a Nikon D800E, 24-70mm f2.8.

Inspiration

The ice caves and the awesome colors inspired me to create this shot. I had been trying to get someone to shoot a wedding set out there for months. Since it's quite a hike and rough terrain, and the dress would likely get trashed, it took just the right couple!

Editing

Very little post processing, some minor exposure adjustments and probably a little definition added.

In my camera bag

When I hike or go out I usually like to have my D800E, and the following lenses: 14-24f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8. I am trying a new tripod, a MeFoto Globetrotter carbon fiber. It's small, light and packs easily and supports 26.4lbs, only weighs a little over 3lbs.

Feedback

These caves no longer exist and have subsequently melted away. Plan your shots well in advance and always make sure you scout the area and the different times of the day for lighting. I prefer to shoot natural, and use very little off camera lighting when possible.
