I was down at Brighton Beach taking in a crisp autumn sunrise. Truth be told, I spent about an hour and a half watching the sun come up as I shot a series of time-lapse sequences for a project that I am working on. These iconic bathing boxes which are symbolic of Melbourne, and specifically of Brighton Beach, served as the backdrop for my shoot. It’s quite interesting to watch the sun come up on a crisp autumn morning, how the world goes from dark to light, how the pinks and the yellows kiss the clouds in the sky, how darkness gives way to streaks of light amid long shadows that gradually grow shorter, and generally how the world wakes up.
The interesting thing to observe was the demographic at the beach – older men getting together to train while braving the somewhat frigid waters of Port Philip Bay, older couples and singles taking their morning walks in the company of their dogs, 30-something young couples and singles getting a brisk walk in – some with their dogs, and some without. The interesting thing was that I did not see a single person under the age of 30 at the beach at first light. Perhaps this is something to take on board – that humans appreciate life when they have experienced it more… both the good and the bad, so that they can truly discern what they individually feel is most valued.

Great morning photo. I find the sunlight in the morning more difficult to work with than the sunsets.
