Melbourne is rated as the world’s number 1 city in terms of livability. No city of this nature would ever function without a mass rapid transport system. Melbourne’s railway system has been in operation since the 1854. Currently operated by Metro Trains Melbourne, the network is based on a commuter rail model centred around the city’s Central Business District and specifically Flinders Street Station. Operating with 16 electrified lines, the central City Loop subway, and around 200 stations, with a total length of 372 km of electrified lines, the predominantly surface level network serves over 200 million trips every year.
Melburnians may well have a few things to complain about the railway system that they have, but nonetheless, anyone living beyond the inner suburbs invariably uses this network to get to and from work. In the immediate foreground is Federation Square, which also houses the studios of SBS. Further back in the skyline are the Eureka Tower, the Rialto Towers, and the spire of the Arts Centre.
I happen to live walking distance from work. I took the opportunity to carry my camera and tripod with me during my early morning commute to work, and finally got around to taking this particular shot which I have had etched in my head for a while, and which I have been itching to take for several weeks now.
There is a further story about this image (and several other images that I shot on this particular morning)… I will share in the weeks to come, and I promise not to disappoint!
