At the helm of a small coastal town known mostly for its surf culture, resident hippies and breathtaking beaches, Byron Bay’s most iconic claim to fame is its lighthouse which is perched close to the easternmost point on mainland Australia. The lighthouse is easily accessible by road 24 hours a day. You can drive up there during normal operating hours, or park about 200 metres and a short walk downhill from the site throughout the day. The location is a favourite among locals, with folks making the demanding hike up to the hill, and then down to the rocks and back every morning. When visited at night, one can see the beam of the lighthouse reach out as far as the highway leading to the Gold Coast on the mainland side, as it sweeps along the horizon.
If there is a best time to visit this spot, its at sunrise. It provides the perfect spot to watch the sun come up over the ocean in the east and start your morning after being warmed by the sun’s first rays.
