Webb Bridge is an award-winning bridge that links the edge of Southbank on the southern side of the Yarra to the Docklands on the North. It forms a cycling and pedestrian link to the main part of Docklands, through Docklands Park. Designed by Denton Corker Marshall, in collaboration with artist Robert Owen, it is the conversion of the former Webb Bridge rail link. The bridge lies near the Charles Grimes Bridge, over the Yarra. Its polished metal lattice lends a curious structure to visitors, pedestrians, passers-by, residents, and of course, photographers.
The Docklands has a bit of an interesting story here in Melbourne. The precinct was, at one time, pitched as the place to live in, just outside the central business district. The growth of the precinct hasn’t quite taken off as several individuals had originally foreseen, or would have liked to see. In spite of its proximity to the city, its remains somewhat difficult to access, and isolated. Its residents are predominantly IT workers from overseas who spend a brief stint in Melbourne, or younger residents who are native to Melbourne.
Melbourne has plans of further growing its suburbs, especially within the city limits. Its city council has announced the development of 3 more suburbs along the Yarra’s edge, along with plans for the support infrastructure for sustainable city living… which will, perhaps in time, kick-start the growth and the appeal of the Docklands one more time.
