A deer splashes through a shallow, algae-covered pond in the Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge near Annada, Missouri, 35 miles north of St. Louis. The water levels in this levee-protected wetlands area have been dropping as the level of the nearby Mississippi River continues to drop. The 3,750 acre refuge is home to many animals and water foul.
