Location
This photo was taken in my back yard. We had a small farm in Fenton, Missouri. My daughter wanted a corral built close to the house so we could turn out horses and watch them. This is our old horse, Houdini, who just turned 31. He was born at our farm.Time
It was taken mid morning when very large snow flakes started falling. Houdini is used to me taking photos of him so he wasn't concerned when I walked up with my camera and 70-200mm lens.Lighting
I wanted a tight composition so the snow would stand out on him. When it is snowing, the light is always pretty nice and even.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 1Dx Mark IV and a 70-200mm f2.8 lens.Inspiration
I love to take photos in the snow, especially when big flakes are falling. I had any number of subjects to look at on our farm. The barn is another great subject in the snow, along with the many birds that visit my feeders. When it is snowing, it is time to get outside and explore.Editing
This photo took very little post processing. It spoke for itself. In my camera bag
I no longer carry a camera bag - hard on my shoulders and back. I carry two Canon cameras: one with a 24-70mm lens and the other with a 70-200mm lens. Those two lenses cover most daily situations. I do have a macro lens for closeup studies and I use my company's 400mm f2.8 lens for far away subjects, like eagles.Feedback
Get outside. Explore. Harsh weather can create more dramatic scenes. The same with night exploring. Keep trying to show similar situations in a new way.
