A single pair of red-necked grebes have been nesting on Waldron Pond for many years. Recently a second pair have been attempting to occupy a portion of the same pond resulting in much vocalizing and visual displaying between the two pairs. It includes raising the feathers across the entire crown of the head in a manner that somewhat resembles ears. While its function I suspect is purely visual I can not rule out the possibility that its dish shape could be serving to either amplify their calls in a forward direction, enable them to more easily hear distant responses or both.
