In the 1980s bison were introduced onto Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska. While their ancestors may have come from the plains they have done rather well on the island. Earlier attempts to raise cattle on Kodiak were not nearly as successful because the island abounds with brown bears that preyed on them. The bison proved to be such tough potentially dangerous adversaries that the bears have chosen to largely leave them alone.
