"Acqua alta" (high water) is a phenomenon which generally takes place in Venice in winter time, when a combination of astronomical tide, strong south wind nd seiche can cause a larger inflow of water into the Venetian Lagoon. This situation created amazing photograph opportunities but also causes difficulty moving around on foot in this amazing city! The tides get deep enough in the winter to require acqua alta boots. In about an hours time Piazza San Marco was mostly covered with water. Fortunately, this only lasts a few hours. But it does occur a couple times daily in the winter. If you go to Venice, check the tide schedule and be ready!
