Behind The Lens

Location

This path is located at the incrediblly modern Hunter's Museum in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee

Time

We were in Chattanooga for a soccer tournament for my oldest daughter. We had checked into the hotel and my wife was beginning to dose off when I alerted her that I wanted to go shoot some of downtown Chattanooga. She and I struck a quick deal....If she would go out with me to take some shots then I would buy her and my daughter some ice cream. That sealed the deal. After searching for somewhere to buy ice cream at that time of night...which by the way..Walgreens was open....I stumbled upon this incredible path at the Hunter's Museum. This photo was taken as my wife slept in the car and my daughter and I found the perfect angle to compose the shot at about 1:30 AM. I say it was well worth the loss of sleep.

Lighting

The pathway was well lite by design from the architects and landscape architects. Therefore, no additional lighting was necessary; however, this was a rainy evening which helped saturate the pavements and gives the photo some contrast that would not typically be there on just any evening.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark iii with a Canon 24-105 f/4 L series lens on a tripod with a intervalometer trigger.

Inspiration

I'm an engineer and know the struggle necessary for the civil engineers and architects to design a site with such amazing practically, beauty, and meeting ADA requirements. This was an incredible task and something that we should appreciate as users of these incredible accomplishments but also as photographers to show others of the amount of effort these designers went through to accomplish the design.

Editing

I used lightroom to process the photo and opened up the shadows and dropped the highlights a bit. I also bumped the clarity and dropped the blacks. Repetitively lightly processed image.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D mark iii; Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L; Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L; Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L; Sigma 50mm f/1.4; Canon 2x Extender III; Canon 24-105mm f/4 L; Canon 100mm f/2.8 L

Feedback

Get out there and appreciate the hardwork of others designing these buildings, sites, and locations we all enjoy looking and using everyday. Don't be afraid to get out in the evening after a little rain or even during a little rain. Use some precautions to protect your equipment but some of my favorite images have been taken on rainy evenings. The rain tends to keep people inside and the rain saturating the ground gives a ton of contrast and clarity to pavements and other architectural design elements.
