The Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Zaandam is a visually stunning 4 star hotel has an impressive façade. The structure is a lively stacking of various examples of the traditional houses to be found in the Zaan region. Excellent architecture has led to this beautiful structure!
On this day, when we first arrived it was raining with tons of clouds which made for terrible shooting conditions; however, we decided to brave the cold and stick it out to see if anything happened closer to dark. We ate some incredible macaroons then I looked up and the sky had become partly cloudy bring in some light. I quickly hurried back to my spot to capture this architectural jewel. I didn't have my tripod so, I set my camera up on our cold weather neck wraps to get to the proper composition and set my timer. I was so pleased with the outcome! Grateful for great architecture, a break in the weather, and my never failing canon gear!

Eric, ALL your architectural photos are fantastic! Is that your specialty/profession or do you just like buildings?

Location
This was taken in the city of Zaandam just outside of beautiful Amsterdam in the Netherlands.Time
This was taken right at sunset during a break in the storm clouds.Lighting
The lighting in my opinion is what makes this shot very interesting. When we arrived onsite we had full cloud cover so I was very disappointed. However,we visited down the street and ate some macaroons to wait for sunset. Sunset came and the clouds temporarily broke allowing the final light of the sun to pole through the clouds while the street lamps came on making it a great time to capture the amazing architecture!Equipment
Canon 5D Mark IV with Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L lens. Probably the most important thing was that I captured this with my camera sitting on my toboggan on the hand railing because I had left my tripod at the hotel.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this picture by the incredible architecture being displayed. I am a structural engineer by education and practice and love interesting building design!Editing
I dropped my highlights and raised my shadows. Bumped my exposure a bit and set my black and white points. In my camera bag
Canon 5D Mark IV; Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L; Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L; Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L; Sigma 50mm f/1.4; Canon 2x Extender III; Canon 24-105mm f/4 L; Canon 100mm f/2.8 LFeedback
Be patient. If the lighting isn't right when you first show up don't give up and don't think you can't go back. Just watch your lighting and be willing to stick through the tough times until something interesting happens.
