As a wildlife biologist I am quite sensitive about minimizing wildlife disturbance when taking photos. In addition to using a telephoto and being some distance away I later cropped the photo as tightly as I could then used software to decrease the distraction of the surrounding landscape by reducing the amount of depth of field.
