Behind The Lens

Location

the photo was taken at Laguna beach, in West Java Indonesia. It was one of most dramatic sunset i ve ever experienced.

Time

It require 4 hours driving from the town where i lived. I arrived on location about 3 PM and waiting about 2 hours for the sun to set. Walking around trying to get composition that i liked, i decided to go as low as possible to the water. I get into the water, about a hip depth, set my tripod and patiently wait the sun to be in position i imagine.

Lighting

I wanted to embrace the dramatic scene of the sunset, and decided to head directly to the sunset and having the mangrove to be sillouhette.

Equipment

This was using Nikon D750 paired with 16-35mm F4 VR GED. I used stack of Hny ND64, RGND 0.9, and CPL as the filter. My trpod was sirui N1204

Inspiration

Was travelled with my friends mr Harry and Adhi, we had been wanted to shot this mangroove tree for a while. The unique shape of the mangroove is very interesting to be photographed. Some say it is like deer horn, others might see it as humpback creatures. Blessed day, the sunset was magical at that time.

Editing

Maximizing the potential of digital RAW file, i alwasy do post processing, while trying to be as natural as i can in this particular case. I did some color adjustment, exposure correction, and cropping.

In my camera bag

I always have my D750 ready in my bag with my favorite lense, 16-35mm. Additional 4 battery packs just in case, full package of filters including CPL, GND 1.2, RGND 0.9, ND64. Love to bring my carbon fiber tripod with me. A macro 105mm F2.8 is a good to bring as well. I didnt carry too much because i believe in travel light. Plan the trip carefully, and bring as you need.

Feedback

West coast of Java is known to have quite dynamic weather. Vision your image before heading up to the location, check the weather and dont forget also to check the tides. It is very important whether it is high tide or low tide at the time you plan to do shooting. It can change your composition, your required equipment, and also strategy. Be prepared and be creative! It is not uncommon that nature give us any surprise!
