Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. Small and peaceful city near by mount merapi and merbabu. This is why it has several waterfall spots including this one. It was a family trip actually, and not a dedicated hunting trip. But I always bring my photography gear almost wherever i go outing whenever it is possible

Time

Good thing about my family is that they are morning people. They have no problem waking up early and we were here as first visitors. For a while, It was like private park for us. It was around 7. Am when we arrived. At 7.30 to 8 am, we were walking through woods and i set up my gear up then take the shot. If you love to shoot landscape, it is always good idea to go out as early as possible before anyone else and wait on the photo spot.

Lighting

It was great when i saw the sun hitting up and behind the waterfall. I think it helped create mystic and add the mood to the picture. It was not a bright sunny day and it was a bit cloudy. But you could still see the sun rays among the tree branches. This situation was helping me because it eliminated harsh exposure different between the highlight and shadows

Equipment

My first dslr was eos 60d and it was what i use for this shot. I love its screen flexibility so i can shot in weird position without struggling to compose the photo. Just set it, tilt it, compose, and shot. It was 24-105 f4 L lense which i believe being the favorite all around lense for many people and i was using CPL and ND to slow things down. These two filters are my favorite especially the CPL. It brings the color pop in this kind of situation. I use sirui carbon tripod to held my camera steady.

Inspiration

It saw it on my IG feed and well this is too hard to be missed. I could bring my litlle cousin as well as he likes to play with water. So win win solution, my big family happy and i get the shot.

Editing

I shot in RAW and it definetily need some touch. I believe that any photos need to be retouch at some point. It is like going to wedding party. You need to dress up and make up even if you already pretty. Your camera helps you but you decide at the end how your image should look like. My work flow in LR including setting the horizon right, evaluate the highlight/shadow area, bring up the color little bit, lessening the clarity to add mysterious mood of flowing water in the woods.

In my camera bag

Of course a camera :) . I travel a lot for work so i am used to have travel light attitude. Love bringing my only and proudly eos60d. in next couple of months i consider to buy 6D to replace the 60d. A sharp all around 24-105 L being the tandem. It is perfect lens for traveler and tend to shoot anything. CPL is also alwyas there. I normally put it in front of my 24-105 and just take it out when do low light shooting. A backup 8GB sandisk is a must. I had experience when i was visiting Houston Zoo and after several shots, suddenly my primary sd card was not detected. Fortunately i brought the backup! One of the reason i go with photography is about landscape. For landscape photography tripod is mandatory. I better regret bringing my tripod around but never use it than I stumble on situation that i know i should go for low speed shooting and need a tripod but i dont bring one. And thats it. Now you know what i mean with light:)

Feedback

Be early bird! They do get the worm. Always prepare for what you are going to shot. If you are going to waterfall like this dont forget your tripod, cpl, and ND. Going here in rainy season is better. The stream is there and the harsh light is less likely. When shooting in sunny day, keep an eye on highlight and shadow especially when sun getting higher. Waterfall like this usually exist on valley which create high dynamic exposure difference. And of course Not only your gear. You need to prepare your physiscs. Be careful when walking trhrough the woods. And be mind of your surrounding. Last but not least, Dont forget that you must left nothing except your shoe track. Littering in this kind of place is just cruel and unacceptable.
