Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the balcony of a friends house whilst visiting them in the Cantal, Auvergne, France

Time

We had finished dinner and it was beginning to get dark and also approaching the time we need to leave. But the storm was getting closer and we were all standing on the balcony watching it approach. Slowly one by one, people drifted back inside to the warmth and after dinner coffee but I couldn't drag myself away.

Lighting

Exposure #1 - I would definitely normally recommend a tripod and filters if you are shooting this during daylight hours but I had neither. So I had to rest the camera on the handrail of the balcony and do exposures of between 0.5secs and 1.5secs - it was a miracle that I finally caught a flash of lightning at all...! Exposure #2 - The glass was balanced on the edge of the desk with a flash under the desk and the camera on a tripod

Equipment

Canon 450D, Canon 480 EXII Flash, Tripod, Trigger release, Wireless remote for flash

Inspiration

There was a competition called Double Exposure, one of the first competitions I ever entered on Viewbug - Exposure #2 was taken specifically with that competition in mind

Editing

Lots - I had to position the flash of lightning nicely in the glass and then cut around it. I remember lots of playing around with the edges until I was happy that the two exposures merged nicely

In my camera bag

I travel light, most of my photography is for my 100 Strangers Project, so camera, 50mm lens and reflector - plus my details, email and web address scribbled on a piece of paper to give to any strangers I photograph...

Feedback

Don't give up taking lightning shots until the storm passes or forces you inside...!!!!
