Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in the back garden of our current lodgings

Time

It was taken mid afternoon

Lighting

I was shooting against the dark hedge in full sunshine - this allowed me to get a fast enough shutter speed to get the shot I was after.

Equipment

Canon 450D with a 50mm lens - no tripod, a bottle of talcum powder and lots of patience...!

Inspiration

Having seen other talcom powder shots, I wanted to try one of my own. But I envisaged the shot exactly before I attempted it. The name 'The magician' was thought of during the post processing and not before the shoot...

Editing

Slight removal of light through the hedge. Alter contrast and some dodge tool to lighten the face.

In my camera bag

Camera, two lenses and a reflector - I travel light...

Feedback

The timing is quite tricky but perseverance prevailed in the end. Shoot with a fast shutter speed on a bright day against a dark background. Get your model to clap their hands together with a small amount of powder on them. Shoot small bursts of photos as the model claps their hands and there is sure to be one good shot to work with. My model who is quite young enjoyed it for a few minutes but quickly got bored so work quickly...!!! I am hoping to try again some time with coloured powder paint instead - try it and let me know how you get along...!
