Lava ocean entry from the 2016 Kalapana lava flow on the Big Island of Hawaii. Watching new earth being formed is an amazing experience. Boiling ocean waves crashing into fresh lava & giving off clouds of steam along with scatter violent lava bursts from pressure release, creation of the earth is mesmerizing & powerful sight to see.

Hawaii, the only state where it's land mass keeps growing. Beautiful photo. I will be leaving for Oahu next week with camera, lenses, & tripod in tow. Although Oahu does not have regular lava flows such as this, you definitely give me inspiration.

I lived on the Big Island for 12 years. I grew up there, and honestly it was the one place I felt like I belonged. It is a magical place if you dare to open your eyes. It definitely brings a whole new meaning to the 6th sense. Aloha 'oe Tutu Pele. A hui hou.

Location
Near Volcano National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Best way is to enter from up North through Kalapana and hike in on the gravel road. It's not been this easy to get to the lava in a very long time.Time
Sunrise.Lighting
I shot at sunrise so I could see detail on lava rock but still have that glow from the lava with out sunlight washing it out. Also the water had color instead of being dark.Equipment

I wanted to capture the feeling of the raw power of the lava and nature.Editing
Using light room I did increase the brightness 3 full stops and added clarity to help the waves stand out like the lava. Brought the vibrancy up to bring out more blue in the surf.In my camera bag

For a tricky light situation like this I highly recommend a full frame body camera with a solid tripod. Then just persistents, keep shooting untill you got the shot just so. Timing the waves with the lava & steam was a real challenge, but worth it.
