I took this photo while I was in Death Valley this past spring. We started at Zabriskie point but my favorite sunrise picture that day was this view over the badlands.Time
We drove most of the night and ended up sleeping in our car to capture this sunrise.Lighting
My favorite time of day to shoot is during the golden hour. I love the soft shadows, the warm light and the variations in color from day to day.Equipment
I took this shot with my Canon 60D & Sigma 15-30mm lens. I used a tripod as well but that was it! My settings for this shot were 1/400 sec at f/7.1 and ISO 100.Inspiration
I love the desert, so naturally I wanted to go and take some landscape photo's in California's Death Valley. I originally wanted to get a shot of Zabriskie Point, but it was a cloudy day leaving it poorly lit. I turned around and that's where I saw this moody, golden light peaking through the clouds. I loved how it was illuminating the badlands, so I quickly moved my gear and set up for this shot.Editing
I did do some post processing, but less than usual. I decreased my highlights in Lightroom to bring out the lost detail in the sky. I then did some dodging and burning with my brushes in Photoshop. I then finished it off with a vignette to draw the viewers eye in.In my camera bag
Beside my camera I always carry my Sigma wide angel lenses. I love filters so I usually carry a ND 1000, ND variable, UV and a Polarizing filter. I also am big on keeping my gear clean so I carry plenty of supplies for that.Feedback
I feel for the most part you need to plan your shoots for landscape photography, but sometimes you get lucky! The light changes every second, so taking your time to navigate a great spot and being patient is key. I feel the best landscape photographs have amazing lighting that bring mood and character to the picture. In this case my original plan didn't work out because of poor lighting, but by moving where there was good lighting I got a much better shot. Also, get up early for sunrise and stay out for sunset. The lighting is my favorite at these times and you will get to photograph the most beautiful skies for your photos.
