Behind The Lens

Location

Off the coast of Kaikoura, New Zealand

Time

This shot was taken during an organised daytime whale watching tour.

Lighting

It was early afternoon when this picture was taken - the last of three attempts to catch the tail of a diving sperm whale. It was a lucky shot really. The whale just happened to dive in front of a beautiful mountain range, which made a great background for this image.

Equipment

Sony A77 with 70-400mm G2 lens

Inspiration

This is pretty much the ultimate shot to take on a whale watching tour. I was desperate to get it, somehow. We spotted three sperm whales on this 3 hour trip, and this was the last one! The crew just about managed to position the boat perfectly, and I happened to be on the right side of the boat to catch the whale was it was diving after 30 minutes on the surface.

Editing

The only post-processing that was done here, was some basic ironing out of levels and contrasts. I tried to keep this as close to reality as I could.

In my camera bag

I usually carry the bulk of my kit with me: Sony A77, various lenses (16-50mm kit lens, 70-400mm long lens, 105mm macro, 50mm portrait, 10-24mm wide angle), some filters (mostly Lee), cleaning stuff, spare battery and memory cards

Feedback

This is really about being in the right place at the right time. There's no predicting what the whales are going to do and when, and it's pot luck how the boat is positioned at the time too. You're working with wildlife here, so everything is entirely left to chance.
