This image was taken in my backyard as I saw some dandelion flowers blossomed. I'm always amazed by beautiful macro shots, and that's why I want to create my own pictures.Time
It was a cloudy day, the sun was covered so a slower shutter speed was require. However, it had very light wind which made shooting handheld a little bit easier.Lighting
Though there was not much light, I still wanted a shutter speed that could help me avoid a blurry image. In the end, I got away with images that were slightly underexposed as I knew that I could fix them later in post processing.Equipment
For this shot, I used a Nikon D3300 with a Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro lense. Although I have a macro ring flash, I find myself rarely use it since i'm not fond of a black background.Inspiration
As a big fan of macro photography, I always look for new opportunities to shoot macro. I once chased after an ant to get an image of him bringing food to his nest. This image of the dandelion flower with water drops is the one that I picked from a dozen of different compositions. I find satisfaction and fun in both the final image and process of making it.Editing
Talking of editing, I often do basic adjustments for my macro shots. I want my images to have a natural look so normally, correcting exposure, adding sharpness and clarity are the main re-touch that I do. Sometimes it's good to create a vignetting effect so the viewers will be drawn more into the subject, and away from distractions. In my camera bag
Recently I have upgraded to a full frame camera for better and quicker control of the camera. My kit includes a Nikon D750 body, Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro, Nikon 18-35mm f3.5-5.6 (for landscape shots) , Nikon 70-210mm f3.5-5.6 (for extra reach). I also carry a Dolica Proline tripod, macro ring flash, shutter release remote, and a cleaning kit.Feedback
Macro photography has opened a whole new world for us. Often we miss beautiful little things so macro images help us to have a closer look to everything around us. Being a self taught photographer, I find that trial and error is the essential method to improve my photography. Get your gears out and actually shoot images is probably the fastest way to learn about photography. For macro shooters, I think that the Internet is a very useful source of techniques, ideas, and inspiration. Seeing an superb macro shot pushes me to create one by myself, it may also pose a challenge but that is where we find the fun and satisfaction in photography.
