Location
This was taken inside the Salina Turda salt mine which is located in the Durgau-Valea Sarata area of Turda, the second largest city in Cluj County, Romania.Time
It was a wonderful break from work, having spent the day wandering about. Some colleagues and I decided to visit and this would have been taken sometime mid-afternoon.Lighting
I wanted to capture the darkness and mysterious aura, the humidity and ambient fascination of being deep under ground. I held the camera steady on a railing and used the naturally available light.Equipment
At the time, I used my old Rebel XSi and the 55 mm kit lens... it was all I had but it was able to capture the scene rather well.Inspiration
It was a huge cavern and the walls held so much detail in the veins of minerals housed deep inside the rock, the smell of humid earth deep down was incredible and the sights breathtakingly made accessible.Editing
I did do some minor post processing to draw focus to certain areas and to draw out the texture. In my camera bag
This was taken with my old Rebel XSi, however nowadays I carry a Canon 5D MK IV with Canon L EF f2.8 24-70 USM II and an L EF 70-200 f2.8 USM IS, a Canon EOS 70D, Tamron 18-270 as my walk-around lens. I also carry a Sigma 10-20 F/3.5 DC HSM, a Canon EF 50 1.8 STM, various Tiffen UV/haze filters, Kenko Pro1 ND's, Cameron CPF's. I have a TriggerTrap cable to experiment with for long exposures etc. A Canon 600 EX-RT II SpeedLite as well as a Metz 44 AF-1 flash unit rounds out my bag.Feedback
Darkness requires you to often use manual settings and a steady shot to capture your intentions. Don't be afraid to experiment, memory cards are huge and plentiful. Use any available means to stabilize your shot and don't be afraid to use a higher ISO. Modern cameras are great for low noise.
