I shot this photo in Malibu, CA, at a beach I had never been to. I am discovering more and more how little I used to explore while growing up in Southern California and I am finding all of these new places now just a few hours away from my old home. El Matador beach is definitely the most stunning stretch coastline I have seen in Southern California. There were numerous caves and the light was beautiful. This little cave allowed me to capture the glowing ray of light coming through and also get some of the sky that was lighting up.I really enjoy the tide in this image as it is shaped like an "S" and gives the feeling of motion, leading you out through the cave and into the sea. The shape of the cave reminds me of a famous sea stack in Australia named "Horse Head Rock," a place I have always dreamed of shooting.

This composition is perfect. The edge of the wave is a beautiful S shape leading strait to the hole in the cliff.

I lucked out and was able to shoot a brilliant sunset.Lighting
The way the light was coming through the sea arches at this amazing beach was so surreal, the mist from the tide would make it glow and look so defined.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 6D, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L and a cheap Manfrotto Tripod.Inspiration
I saw the way the tide would come through this sea arch and make a perfect "S" shape every so often. I got about knee deep in the water and used the curvy tide as a leading line through the arch. It was a truly unique scene compared to other seascapes I have shot.Editing
I blended several exposures together for the dynamic range since I was shooting straight into the light. The visible side of the sea arch was very dark as well as the tide in the shade. I did some dodging and burning to accentuate highlights and adjusted the color balance to be accurate. In my camera bag
My Canon 6D, Sony a7s, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Trusty lens cloth and a Mefoto Tripid.Feedback
When you are shooting seascapes you should always stop down to f/22 since focus stacking isnt really an option when the tide is changing so much, this will help you to keep the scene more in focus with a deeper depth of field. I would slow down the shutter as well but not too much, in order to keep texture in the moving tide. I usually shoot no slower than 1", it just depends on how fast the water is moving. I would also recommend a wide angle lens.
