Behind The Lens

Location

Grand Teton NP, WY

Time

I shot this image at sunset, after several days of having no good light for either sunrise, or sunset.

Lighting

It appeared it was going to be another, uneventful sunset. It was completely cloudy, dark, and raining. I was persistent and decided to wait it out to see what happened, because you just really never know! To my surprise, for a few minutes some sunlight was able to break though the clouds and shine around the forms of the pointy mountains which made these spike like sun rays of intense color in the sky. I have yet to see another sunset like this one. Before the light was gone, I was lucky enough to be able to capture this image.

Equipment

Canon 6D, Canon 24-105 f/4 L, Manfrotto Tripod.

Inspiration

I really love mountains in general and the Tetons are some of the most stunning peaks in the US. I had seen lots of great photos of epic light at this location, but usually at sunrise. Im happy I was able to capture something a little different and I found a comp that was unique at the time.

Editing

The image is made up of several exposures I took to make up for dynamic range and also focus stacking. 4 images were taken focusing on different points, 1 for each of the bushes and 1 for the mountains/sky. Several exposures were taken of the sky and combined together for the sun rays and a slow exposure was taken for the water at 30" and blended in. There was a lot of wind so I could not shoot the rest of the scene at a slow shutter.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D, Sony a7s, Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L II, Canon 70-30 f/4 L, Canon 24-105 f/4 L, batteries, lens cloth, shutter release remote, some kind of tripod.

Feedback

When you are shooting in situations where you would like to do a long exposure effect like on waterfalls for example, but there is wind and the foliage or other objects are blowing around, shoot and combine 2 photos together. One at a faster exposure and another at the speed you prefer. In photoshop you can mask together the parts you want from each one and adjust exposure levels in order for them to match.
