Location
This was taken at Sunset Bay State Park near Coos Bay, OregonTime
It was late afternoon approaching sunset.Lighting
In addition to natural lighting from the sun in the background, I used the internal flash of my camera, adjusted to the lowest setting, to illuminate the details of the driftwoodEquipment
I used my Canon PowerShot SX230 point & shoot in "program" mode. I rarely use a tripod for my landscape/sunset photos.Inspiration
After most of the storms on the Oregon coast, there's always such a variety of driftwood washed up on the beaches. This one had interesting curves, grain, and texture. My original intent was to photograph the grain of the driftwood but when I saw the natural hole and saw the direction I could see through it, I immediately started trying to line up photos of the beach 'framed' with the driftwood. The beachcombers were a bonus.Editing
I may have cropped for content. Normally, the most I ever do is adjust brightness/contrast and highlights/shadows.In my camera bag
I always have my Sony A57 and my Canon point & shoot, extra batteries, spare memory cards, and microfiber cloth.Feedback
Investigate your surroundings! If you are shooting a sunset that has a cloudless sky, look for plants, animals, and other items in the vicinity that can be used to create an interesting foreground.
