Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at our local wetlands park. There are various areas here that provide a perfect place for the native wildlife to set up a home. The wetlands have many different walking paths and even boardwalks over the swamp areas. There is even a Bush Chapel for weddings. The amount of photo shoot opportunities are vast as there are so many different areas to walk through. The large tidal lake is a fantastic spot to feed the huge amount of bird life and there are millions of small fish and even turtles that come up to feed as well. Overall, this is usually one of my main photography spots and it is so serene and relaxing even on days when the BBQ areas are being used.

Time

The best time is usually around sunrise and sunset as the wildlife is very busy catching food and activities are fun to watch. Some of the wildlife is quite used to having humans around and the interaction can be fun.

Lighting

Not sure of the time of this shot but because it was taken at the tidal lake. The lake doesn't have many trees around the edge so the lake is in full sun all day, just use the best angle for the shot you desire

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Fuji Fine Pix camera, definitely obsolete now though. Didn't use a tripod or flash, and the lens was the one that came with the camera.

Inspiration

I love going to the wetlands as there always opportunities to get great photos and because this was my usual 5.30 am 5 kilometre walk area, the swans were starting to get quite used to me, they would come quite close and expect a little food from me. I set up to wait on this one to come closer and was so happy when he came right up to the edge of the lake where I was sitting.

Editing

Not really, I just trimmed the edges to remove a few hundred ducks... (they were all waiting on a feed, which I didn't have any with me at the time.)

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 500d, 2 lenses and my tripod. Remote control and dusting clothes. Not much else really.

Feedback

Just be patient and watch what is happening around you and around the animal you are trying to take a photo of, do not try and force it to happen. This of course are wild animals and can be a bit unpredictable at times. I have been chased once by the male swan, when I was far enough away he stopped and watched me for quite awhile, he was protecting mum and 2 signets that had just hatched and as luck would have it, I didn't have my camera with me at the time.
