Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my backyard. The possum pair were always hanging out here and were waiting for their treats. they were very friendly.

Time

This was taken around 7.00pm, the pair were always around the backyard trees searching for their evening meal. As I had started to know their routine as such and was always outside around that time of night anyway, they were used to me and were quite friendly. I always had a few treats of grapes set aside for them. I had been taking photos in the yard and they were used to the flash of the camera. So I ended up up taken a few shots over a period of about 10 minutes. And ended up choosing this one.

Lighting

As there was a light on the back patio which gave of a glow down the backyard, i just decided to use the standard flash on my camera to highlight the area around them in the tree, the patio light wasn't enough at that time of day/night to make them stand out.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon EOS 600D and I used a EFS 55-250mm lens and the cameras flash. I didn't use a tripod at the time.

Inspiration

I took this photo as it was the first time the pair were out together, and had previously realised that the female was pregnant.

Editing

No processing was used as I loved the shot as it was.

In my camera bag

My photography bag has an assortment of things in there and is always ready to go. My Canon EOS 600D and 2 sets of lenses. They are in their own individual slots, the EFS 18-55mm and the EFS 55-250mm. I always have a lens cleaning cloth, a squeeze bubble air dust blower and my double ended pen with separate felt and brush tip. Spare SD cards and remote control for night shots. Tripod sits on the top in its own bag if I need it.

Feedback

Just be patient and calm, no sudden movements. Try to get them used to you and do talk softly to them. As they lived in the roof of the garage at the back, they were always around and eventually were used to me being out there with them when they came out to feed. They love grapes, so always took some to put in a fork in the tree and slowly worked on getting them to eventually take them out of my hand. But I cannot say enough that you don't allow them to just rely on you for their food.
