Location
I took this photo in Alaska on the way from Valdez to Anchorage. The Wrangell Mountains caught my eye as we were driving, so we pulled over into a scenic overlook, and I started shooting.Time
It was 2 in the afternoon on an early June day when I took this picture. That time of day is usually not a great time lighting-wise, but the mountains were very majestic, and I couldn't resist.Lighting
I shot HDR bracketed images to heighten the effects of the light on the clouds and to give the mountains more depth.Equipment
I was using a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 200-400mm zoom.Inspiration
I loved the look of this scene, so I shot it. I haven't seen mountains like this in California.Editing
I shot this image using HDR techniques. I processed the images I shot in Photomatix Pro. Then ran them through a Viveza filter in Photoshop to bring out the detail. In my camera bag
I normally carry a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon 7D. I carry all Canon lenses including a 100-400mm zoom, a 50mm f/1.2 fixed lens, a 28-135 zoom and a fish eye zoom. I think that one's an 8-15mm zoom.Feedback
Just get out there and shoot! Pay attention to your surroundings as you travel. Stop often and experiment with different lenses, times of day, etc.
