This little lady has an old soul.
I was granted access to an old abandoned hotel in Yuma, AZ for a couple of hours. The model I hired cancelled the day of the shoot... and this little girl was nice enough to stop by for 20 minutes before her ballet class. I HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER ABOUT A CANCELLATION IN MY LIFE ;)

I can't pass by this shot again without stopping to say it's a classic in my mind. The lighting, the pose, the sense of place and color palette are exquisite. This image is Already a winner!

Beautiful composition with excellent juxtaposition of the young, lithe and graceful ballerina with the old, worm out, yet graceful setting. The gritty texture suits it. Congrats on your win :)

Beautiful lighting, and a wonderful contrast of a subject that exudes grace and balance with an environment that radiates with a vintage/historic feel. Wonderful!

Stan, thank you so much for your amazing feedback! I do choose my backgrounds carefully because I love the old vs new feel.

I just love the contrast between old and new.I'm talking about the contrast of age between this beautiful young lady ant the antiques in the room of this old house with this lovely couch. Great job.....really great job.

Location
I took this photo in an old hotel in downtown Yuma, AZ. The hotel had been closed for a number of years and was about to be remodeled. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to use it before the old furniture and pictures on the walls were moved out, before it was repainted and lost its old charm.Time
I took this image at 11 am in the morning.Lighting
For my fine art work, I use mainly natural light. The only source of light was a large window so I wanted to shoot at the time of the day when I would get the most light through the window.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark III with my 24-70 mm lens.Inspiration
I love the contrast of new and old. I wanted an image of a young, elegant ballerina in am old, unexpected setting. This girl, however, was my inspiration. She was such a wonderful old soul! She made my job easy and brought her personality to the shoot. She is incredible.Editing
I always post process my images. I used texture overlays and color modification in Photoshop. Also, some dodging and burning here and there. In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. I always have a grey card, a tripod, and a reflector with me.Feedback
Know how to use your equipment. Every place you shoot in is different, and choosing the right settings and lens for the job is very important. Also, learn how to pose people. Posing is always necessary, but it shouldn't be noticeable! Get to know your subject and make them comfortable, use poses that come natural to them. People feel very uncomfortable when they have to deal with a silent photographer so I treat every photo session as a mini photography class, I always explain what I am doing, why I am asking them to do something or stand a certain way. It is easier to work with someone who trusts you and your knowledge than with someone who has no idea what is happening.
