Location
This image was taken in an old mill in Lawrence, MA. I managed to get access to the 5th floor of the mill only one week before this beautiful location it was transformed into new apartments. It was meant to be! I love textures and older buildings and this location was perfect. Also, they had open windows covered with white plastic (this makes the most beautiful light!) There was no air conditioning, it was really really hot, and I was sweating a lot, but the large windows and beautifully textured walls were just too good to be true :)Time
This shot was taken at about 11 am. I remember it was a really hot and humid day and it was probably not the best time to be stuck here with no air conditioning, but it was the only time we had access to this beautiful building.Lighting
I love working with natural light. It makes everything look so natural and unplanned, so even though I had a speedlite with me, I chose not to use it as fill light. I enjoy working with shadows and soft light, but because it was 11 am the quality of light wasn't the best. I used large pieces of white plastic (I found at the site) to diffuse the light and get it to be this soft an beautiful. I also played a bit with how far from the window she would stand. I wanted just enough shadows to give her a unique and mysterious look, but it was also important to me to keep detail in the shadows.Equipment
I show this with my Canon 5D MarkIII and my 24-70mm f/4L lens. I didn't use a tripod, flash, or reflector.Inspiration
Shooting women is one of my favorite things, my subject here is a very strong lady so I wanted to show strength and confidence and at the same time softness and femininity. This is also reflected in the background...I love photographing beautiful subjects in rundown buildings. I am constantly asking people if they know of any abandoned buildings I can use. I was looking to create a contrasting look in this image: strength vs softness... light vs dark...Editing
I post-process every image. Having said that, there is very little done to this image. I made sure the colors were exactly the way I wanted them to be, and dodged the background a little. In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. I always have a grey card, a tripod, canon speedlite, and a reflector with me.Feedback
