I took this photo outside of my house on the first snow in Golden Colorado.Time
I took this late that night when the nights started to get cold.Lighting
What I started out doing is trying to bounce the light from behind into my face to get a balanced portrait but it quickly turned into a silhouette shoot with one main light behind my head. Interestingly enough the color in my breath is in camera and must have been some kind of chromatic aberration or something to form the colors.Equipment
I used a Canon 7d with the 50mm f1.8 II lens on a tripod at face level. I then had a yongnuo manual flash with the $20 radio flash triggers to fire it remotely. Finally I used the 10 second timer to take the self portrait.Inspiration
I was wanting to get a close up shot of myself with the snow perfectly stopped by the flash and maybe experiment with silhouettes. But after it got extremely cold I started to get antsy and took a bunch of pictures of my silhouette with my breath being lit up but the pictures just weren't working so I was about to give up. The last picture was this one and like I said before it had the all of the color in camera and I know that was the one I was looking for.Editing
I did almost no post other than clarity and a little more saturation to make the colors pop a little more. I basically did nothing but process it in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I usually have a canon 7D or now I have the 7D Mark II with a 70-200mm f2.8 USM, 300mm f4 USM, and the 50mm f1.8 II, with my yongnuo flash and triggers all in a lowepro bag.Feedback
I really did it as simple as it could be. I used a mutual flash set at its lowest power and used the flash as my shutter by having it at 1/25th in camera. To be honest I have no clue how to get the color in the breath because it seem ed to be just luck but there probably are ways to do that in post. Really all it takes is a flash and a well focused subject.
