This photo was taken in Moab, Utah. I don't want to say exactly where because it is becoming a little over traveled and I don't want to see this place go.Time
This images was taken in the fall on a trip between Idaho and Colorado. I remember hoping the light would poke out before the sun went down and just as the sun was going to set it found a space to shine trough. It was the first time the light came out that day and it last all about 15 minutes.Lighting
This is all natural light. I would love to use strobes but for my workflow this is definitely best I can do. But when nature gives you light like this you can't complain.Equipment
For this shot I believe I used my 7D MarkII with the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art on my Manfrotto Pro 190 with an FLM ball-head.Inspiration
Like most of my photos my purpose is to document what's happening around me. I was laying in my hammock thinking about the few times I've seen clouds like this in Moab and hoping for the sun to light the land and the could to bring the drama. Sitting in my hammock being patient the sky gave me what I wanted and I knew the picture I needed to take.Editing
I always do post processing, for this image I just used Lightroom Classic and mostly focused on adding contrast back into the muted scene. I also played a little with local adjustments so your eye goes from the warm sun to me sitting in the hammock and then off into the distance. Specifically I darken the ground around me and made sure that my cream colored pullover wasn't too bright. I also wanted to show the branding that was in the image. In my camera bag
My bag these days us always changing which is good and bad. At the time of this photograph my bag was filled with: 7D MarkII, Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art, Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L USM, Canon 24-105mm F4 L USM, and a Mamiya C3 with Sekor 80mm F2.8 blue dot version. All in my favorite bag the Lowepro Whistler 350AW.Feedback
Be patient, pre-visualize, plan, and be flexible. I planed the location and knew the time the sun set and where it would set that evening. The weather was the only change variable and for that all you can do is be patient. It also helps to have the right gear and colors that work together. No I did not buy my sleeping bag to match my hammock but if you were to want to take pictures like this you should think about these things.
