Behind The Lens

Location

The Pacific Southwest railway museum is about 50miles east of San Diego in Campo. It is a fascinating place to enjoy and shoot. There are all sorts of trains and related objects in their "survivor" state as well as fully restored trains and cars to walk through as if in a time warp. Excellent hidden gem!

Time

This was shot around mid-day. Since it was inside and the light was artificial, I didn't have to worry about the dreaded harsh mid-day shadows!

Lighting

I shot this at ISO 1600 on a Nikon FX. There was enough indoor museum lighting to get a good exposure without a flash.

Equipment

Hand held Nikon D600 with a Nikon 16-35mm F/4 lens. This was simply a, "Wow look at this!" and shoot moment...!

Inspiration

I was amazed at how much an engineer had to keep track of to run this type of steam engine train. The leading lines along the ceiling and sides provided an almost vignette-like composition opportunity.

Editing

Obviously I turned it into black and white image. I ran a bit of a high pass filter to add some micro-contrast to edges, and a tiny bit of noise reduction using the Nik Software plug-in... It was a good exposure and didn't need much.

In my camera bag

These days I usually carry a Nikon D810 and a Nikon D600, with whatever lenses I think are the most suitable for the outing of the day. On that day, the D600 had my Nikon 16-35mm F/4 and the D810 had either my Nikon 24-70 F/2.8G or my Nikon 70-200mm F/4. I was switching around the two of them that day. I had a Nikon SB-700 flash mounted on both bodies, but I was using them for fill flash when I was exploring outside, where is was pretty sunny...

Feedback

For this type of image one has to use a high ISO camera, or set up an elaborate lighting arrangement. A flash would have caused lots of reflection(s), which would have been very tough to control with all of the curved, metallic edges. The Nikon D600 is an awesome high ISO camera...
