150 year old St.Joseph's church in Kaupo was once the center of a thriving, but now almost abandoned village. I found this on the most remote road in all of Maui. Almost a 3 hour drive through lava beds to find this gem...!

Hi Cathy. Yes it is one way to Hana, but the southern route through the lava fields, not the usual "Road to Hana." We were on the way to the Kipahulu Visitor Center. We did go through to Hana after hiking to the Waimoku Falls. The northern road back from Hana was truly magnificent!

Location
I took this photo in the all but abandoned village of Kaupo on the southernmost edge of Maui. 75 years ago this village had as many as 250 inhabitants, but now they've mostly moved away. This remarkable relic lives on. It appears well cared for, however the grounds and some of the out buildings no longer even have roofs. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to spend some time there and feel the spirits of those who have come before me to this holy place...Time
My best estimate is 10:30-11AM. We were attempting to find Haleakala National Park by driving the southern route. The road was passable for an automobile, but just barely! It was a pristine day, hot and humid, but lovely in its own way!Lighting
It was a very bright day with some clouds, to add texture to the sky.The air was so very clear, one of those days where you are simply glad to be outside and alive. It was a wedding day, without the wedding!Equipment
I shot this handheld with my Nikon D600. The lens was my Nikon 16-35mm F/4 VR @ 16mm.Inspiration
I was inspired by the lost Maui... The spirits of the elders and all of those who came before me was thick in this place. I had been driving for sometime through burned lava fields and suddenly this jewel on these grounds appeared. It called out to me...Editing
The image was shot in RAW, so the normal developing was needed. It was a good exposure, so not much was necessary, I did add a touch of the Nik filter, darken outer/lighten center. I also added a touch of Orton effect, which seemed a good choice for this image...In my camera bag
Nikon D810, D600 bodies. Nikon 24-70mm F/2.8G, 70-200mm F/4 VR, 16-35mm F/4 VR and Sigma 50mm F/1.4 Art. Two Nikon SB-700 speedlites. I'm still looking for the right 85mm lens, but haven't found it yet.Feedback
Try to take the best image you can with the light and conditions you have, and equipment you have with you. One of my most awarded images was shot on a D50 with a kit lens, on a misty, rainy, cloudy day... As to wide angle and ultra-wide angle lenses, my opinion is they are not about getting more in the frame, but in getting closer to your subject. Get as close to your subject as possible to capture that wonderful wide angle distortion. In post processing, don't get stuck in a rut and don't let others tell you not to try something, however stay away from the HDR sliders after having too much coffee! Good luck! 8^)
