I took this photo at an experimental fish hatchery pond owned by the University of Idaho, north of Potlach, ID.Time
It was early evening, almost in the prizes "golden hour" that we rant and rave about.Lighting
With it being almost the perfect "golden hour", and the vast amount of trees and shrubbery nearby, the lighting was almost serene. The sunrays shone through the trees in such a breathtaking way... the experience was incredible.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 450D, and if I remember correctly, I used a 18-55mm lens, with a 10x macro lens attatched. I used no flash, or tripod.Inspiration
I had originally gone around the far side of the pond to snap a shot of a little bird flitting around the trees, when I saw these beauties mating in the rib-cage tall grass. I was so excited, I was shaking. I couldn't believe my luck! With a deep breath, I took the shot that inpsired my confidence as a photographer. All of my work after this reigned supreme in comparison to what I had previously shot before.Editing
This photo is SOOC... I didn't even adjust the contrast, highlights, or anything. I wonder how it would pop if I did post-process it, but I am so stinking happy with it the way it is, I've never bothered! In my camera bag
My first DSLR was a Canon 450D 12.2 mega pixel camera. I had the standard kit lens, an 18-55mm lens, and an array of filters, mostly macro. Currently, due to financial hardship, I am without a camera. I hope to be able to upgrade to at least an 18 mega pixel, so I can sell my work on stock photo sites as well... but time will tell what new baby I add to my bag!Feedback
Look all around you. Notice the tiny things... sometimes, it's the tiniest things that make the most incredible image. Get down and let on the ground. Roll around, find some new perspectives. Look under leaves and in the oddest places. You'll never know what you might discover! You might pick out and just happen to notice something incredible on your way to an idea you had... don't miss out on that opportunity... you noticed it for a reason!
